Shanti leaned over Gamin as he began to stir. When he opened his eyes he winced as lantern light filled his vision.
"Are you alright?" Shanti pulled another thin blanket over him. "I'll go get you something to eat," she said before he could answer. She rushed out and shortly after Celebrine walked in, followed by Colonel Iomi and General Rae'yd. Celebrine went and sat on her own bed, not saying a word. The General came and stood by Gamin.
"What did you see?" he asked bluntly. Gamin stared at him blankly. See? How did the General know that he saw something? "W-what are you talking about?" he asked weakly. He was surprised at how hoarse his throat felt. He tried to sit up but was forced to lie down again when the room began spinning. Gamin laid his arm over his eyes, trying to block out the glaring light that hurt them. He didn't want to recall what had happened.
"What did you see?" General Rae'yd repeated. Gamin peered at him from under the shadow his arm created. He and the Colonel were watching him expectantly, but Celebrine wasn't; she wasn't even looking at anything. Her head was hanging low and she was fiddling with something in her hands.
Shanti reentered the tent with a tray of food and waited at the door. Gamin sighed when he realized they weren't going to leave him alone.
"It wasn't really anything…at first," he began. "I was floating in a darkness that seemed to go on forever." He hesitated before continuing, debating whether he should mention the memories that came to him. He decided that telling them wouldn't hurt and so said, "Then I was able to see strange shapes floating upwards, they shimmered a little and looked sort of like bubbles. I reached out and touched one, just to see what it was, when it burst." Gamin paused for a moment. Shanti was listening intently and seemed to be curious about the whole ordeal. The General and Colonel were listening as if everything was of vital importance. "I was thrown into a memory of mine," he continued, feeling rather discomforted at how they were acting. "This switched to another one before bringing me back to the darkness. I noticed a smoky mist then. It…spoke to me." Gamin stopped to think about what he just said. Smoke talking? That was impossible. How could smoke talk?
"What did it say?" Gamin was surprised at the General's slow and deliberate question. "Excuse me?"
"The smoke, what did it say to you?"
"That it…they…made contact…"
The General looked at the Colonel gravely and she nodded, standing up and leaving the tent. General Rae'yd turned to Gamin again. "Did anything else happen?"
"N-no…" Gamin watched the tent flap swing shut. "Where is the Co-" Gamin's question was cut off as the General stood up, his head almost brushing the roof of the tent. He just stood there for a moment before nodding and walking towards the tent door. "Let us know if anythin' else 'appens." He paused as he walked past Celebrine. "'e should be fine for now," he said. Celebrine looked down out of the corner of her eyes, avoiding the look Gamin gave her. The General dipped his head in farewell and left the tent.
