Literature Text

Shanti stood where Gamin had left her with her head hung low. Well yeah, she thought. Sacheirs may be traitors here, but they are a great people. And one might be able to change their reputation. She lifted her head and walked over to Gamin's bedroll, setting the book there. She then walked outside, only to see Gamin backing away from Shikomi. He looked scared, like a child seeing a beast for the first time. "Gamin?" Shikomi barked once and Gamin suddenly bolted away. "Gamin!" Shanti reached out her arm, as if she could pull him back, but he was already gone. Shikomi just about ran after him, but she stopped the wolf. "Wait!" Shikomi turned his head and looked at her. He looked confused which made Shanti even more so. "What happened?" she asked. Shikomi whined and she remembered that she couldn't understand his voice. She shook her head and suddenly the wolf was gone, running after his master. Shanti stood where she was, looking off after the wolf. "I need to find Celebrine," she concluded and ran to the Fields.

"Celebrine, Celebrine!" The elf whipped around after hearing her name. She saw Shanti running to her. "How'd you know I was here?" she asked. Shanti stopped at her side and stood panting for a little while. "Instinct," she breathed. "But that doesn't matter right now."
"What do you mean?"
"There's something wrong with Gamin."
Gamin? "What do you mean?"
"I don't really know the details, but we need to find him!" Shanti grasped Celebrine wrists and pulled. "Find him? You mean he's gone missing?" Shanti nodded, worry clearly on face. "What happened?" Celebrine asked.
"I told you I don't know!" Shanti exclaimed.
"Shanti…" Celebrine let her friend pull her back to the camp. They stopped outside the Colonel's tent.
"Colonel!" Shanti shouted. "Colonel, I need to speak with you!"
The warrior stepped out of her tent. "No need to shout, Anegyna."
"But Ma'am, Gamin's gone missing!"
The Colonel paused for a moment. "What did you say?"
"Gamin has gone missing!"
The Colonel turned back into the tent and reappeared shortly after with her cloak and sword. "Where did you last see him?" she demanded.
"Outside our tent." Shanti replied.
"Come with me and tell me everything up to that point."
Shanti walked briskly next to the Colonel while Celebrine followed closely behind. As Shanti recapped what had happened, she listened intently.
"It is as I feared," the Colonel commented when Shanti finished.
"Colonel?" Celebrine asked, confused already by not understanding Shanti explanation. What were these Sacheirs she was referring to? What was wrong with Gamin?
The three arrived where Shanti had last seen Gamin. "I saw them run that way," she said, pointing to the southeast. "Pansca lies in that direction," the Colonel stated. "Then we should head that way right?" Shanti suggested.
The Colonel thought for a moment. "That would probably be best…" she said.
"Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait! I'm not entirely sure what's going on here," Celebrine exclaimed, exasperated. "Why would Gamin go all the way to Pansca? It's only a port town isn't it? There really isn't anything there, right?"
Shanti looked at Celebrine. "Yes, Pansca is a port town," she confirmed. "But that means there's bound to be a ship, and he might try to sail to Iragni without us. I think he might try to prove that he isn't a Sacheir by following through with the plan without our help."
"What?" Celebrine asked. "Is he crazy? He could get killed! Easily, considering the condition he's in right now!" Shanti didn't say anything; neither did the Colonel, who was facing their destination.
